Keeping Your Employees

To assist employers in keeping employees with disabilities productive, MRC offers the following services:

1. Staying On the Job (SOJ) Services

a. Job Site Analysis: The SOJ case manager can perform a job site analysis to help identify the following elements necessary under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA): 1) the essential functions of the job, 2) how the individual's disability may be affecting their ability to perform those functions, and 3) practical accommodation solutions to address these issues and assist the person in performing successfully.

b. Employment Retention Case Management Services: Case management can assist with appropriate disclosure of disability information and medical documentation and can identify appropriate workplace accommodations through completion of a job site analysis. SOJ will facilitate meetings between the employee and the employer to ensure that the accommodations, once implemented, are successful and to ensure that the employee is able to meet performance expectations.

c. SOJ Manual: This manual examines workplace issues and provides practical solutions to the challenges managers face as they hire and retain employees with chronic and changing disabilities.

d. Employer Training: This is a training program designed for human resource professionals and supervisors. The training session covers the nature of chronic and progressive disabilities, employment strategies, work accommodations, costs, benefits, co-worker issues, and requirements of the ADA.

2. Work Site Support Services: Work Site Support services are customized to meet the specific needs of the consumer. Consumers are referred for services once placed on a job, and services may include: individualized training or retraining of the consumer on essential job functions (job coaching), ergonomic work site set-up and instruction on work site systems (i.e., phone, fax, e-mail), development of instructional guides or materials (i.e., checklists or simplified procedures), and intensive follow-up either in person or by phone.

3. Extended Employment Services: These services provide follow-up support to individuals with disabilities working in the community to help them maintain and advance their employment. Because the program is funded through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Economic Security, there is of no cost to the individual. Services could include: regular contacts with the employer to ensure that employee is meeting performance expectations, coordination of support services, counseling on how to communicate effectively within a workgroup, assistance with worksite setup, or organizing/prioritizing tasks.
